Our purpose, values and funding

Didsbury Arts Festival (DAF) is a charity based in South Manchester since 2009, that runs a biennial, community-focused, contemporary arts festival at the end of June/beginning of July, plus related events and projects, in conjunction with other local charities, community centres and arts groups. Most of our work focuses on participatory projects, theatre, music and dance performances, visual art exhibitions, workshops, talks and outdoor events. We are particularly keen to work with residents, schools and community partners in the more disadvantaged neighbourhoods in the area.

Producing a biennial festival provides people with the opportunity to take part, learn and experience art and performance of all kinds, no matter their age, background or financial means. It also enables us to deliver community arts, education and engagement projects with disadvantaged groups, of all backgrounds and characteristics.

Our values of community, fairness, inclusivity, diversity, and creativity reflect our belief that a shared sense of belonging is a fundamental principle for thriving communities.

Community

This guides our actions and decisions and brings a focus to fostering connection and collaboration between companies, and educational, charitable and voluntary groups in and around Didsbury.

Fairness

As a charity we believe we can be more profitable in terms of income and outcomes if we follow a principle of fairness. The artists and performers we work with will be paid fairly for their contribution to our success.

Inclusivity

We believe access to the arts should be equitable. We endeavour to bring a wide range of arts to Didsbury so people of all backgrounds, ability, age and financial means can experience the arts freely. We are a supporter of the Campaign for the Arts and its National Renewal petition.

Diversity

The festival will bring a wide mix of performances and workshops to Didsbury so that all members of society are reflected. We are not afraid to be challenging and unpredictable. We welcome everyone to participate in our events and be volunteers.

Creativity

This is the essence of our festival. We aim to inspire and help people to be creative for life, recognising the benefits of self-expression to individual wellbeing and health, and connection to society.

Funding our work

Didsbury Arts Festival is funded through several means. Our largest grants come from Arts Council England, supplemented by project-specific grants awarded to us through art and community charitable trusts, and local council support.

Corporate sponsors who share our values, are integral to our funding model. We work with small start-ups to established brands to deliver their vision alongside ours.

Fundraising via art workshops and art classes, public donations and private patrons are also a vital part of the funding mix.
