‘Bound by Our Roots’ is a sited sculptural piece which is greatly influenced by the Didsbury and Manchester area and its rich historical and cultural past.

Ongoing Bound by Our Roots I Stand Alone

The sculpture is constructed from metal, reclaimed books, found materials and natural fibres. The silhouette reflects the Baobab Tree, the ‘upside-down tree’ of Africa and Australia. This quirky looking tree will appear as if its roots are exposed to the sky and make direct links to the diverse range of species that exist in Fletcher Moss Botanical Garden.

About the Artist

Claire Louise Mather is a Contemporary Textile Artist living and working in the North of England. Her work is an exploration of drawing with stitch, mixed media and collage. She enjoys using a variety of fabrics mixed with reclaimed mediums and text to create highly individual artworks

Until recently Louise’s work has been primarily gallery based and she has exhibited at numerous venues including Huddersfield Art Gallery, Gallery Oldham and Birmingham NEC. I have also shown work at several national stately homes including Blenheim Palace as part of the Embroiderers’ Guild Capability Brown Festival, celebrating 300 years of his work.

In May 2016 Louise was commissioned to create her first outdoor installation for the biennial Holmfirth Arts Festival family sculpture trail. The work directly responded to the chosen wooded landscape site, in particular the surrounding Rowan trees, and utilised my typical choice of materials but in a completely different way. ‘I Stand Alone’ (pictured) won the public vote for best art installation at ‘Art in the Woods 2016’.

This work will be one of 6 new works commissioned for the festival on this theme with support from Arts Coucil England.
