Didsbury Arts Festival

Didsbury Arts festival is a volunteer led multi arts festival celebrating creative culture in Didsbury, through working with local, national and international artists. 

We are a biennial festival. The next edition will take place from 22 June - 30 June 2019. The festival theme will be Roots. If you would like to join the 2019 team, please get in touch.

FEED: Serving up Didsbury’s Stories on a Plate

Autumn has always been favourite season.  Wool sweaters, crunchy leaves and the smell of cinnamon in the air.  It also has my two favourite holidays: Halloween and Canadian Thanksgiving.  The latter being an excuse to eat copious amounts of food including turkey, stuffing, potatoes, turnips and of course, pumpkin pie.  Every year my Aunt Marjorie had the task of making these pies, each handcrafted in her little kitchen; made with experience, love and…butternut squash.  Yes, my Aunt Marjorie’s famous pumpkin pies did not actually contain pumpkin at all.

 

Food is more that just survival.  With it we make friends, court lovers and reconnect with family.  Inviting someone into your home to eat something that you’ve prepared yourself is perhaps the most personal thing someone can do.  Food also tells a story.  It is personal and reveals so much about us. 

 

 

This is the premise behind FEED, a new commission as part of this year’s Didsbury Arts Festival.  Responding to this year’s theme of Roots, artists Ruth Dyer and Rebecca Legg responded with their idea to celebrate the great recipes of Didsbury, and the incredible people behind them.  Participants have cooked together and spoken about the origins of their favourite recipes.

 

From a favourite Middlesbrough treat to a langoustine dish created in France via Japan, the people and their food have illustrated the diversity of the town and the passion for the food that reminds them of home.

 

Artist Rebecca Legg said,

We’ve had an amazing time cooking, eating and sharing our food memories.  It’s amazing how a taste can really bring us back to a time or place, or remind us of someone special. 

 

 

Taking place in Food Sorcery, an innovative new cookery school housed in the local Waterside Hotel, a select number of dinner parties will invite audience members to sample a selection of dishes cooked by local Didsbury residents and hear the weird, wonderful and heart-warming stories behind them.  It will also be a chance to talk about your own food memories and forge new friendships around the dinner table.  Audiences will take home a limited edition, artist-designed cookbook which shares how to make these special dishes and profiles the local people behind them.
